Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...
November 13th, 2009
Happy Friday, folks!
And Friday the 13th, no less!! Casual News Friday pays homage to the creepiness with Flash buggies, German killers very concerned with their privacy and, just for fun, a little on NYC's newest Apple Store.
Flash Could Getcha
In a brilliant move, security researchers decided to go public with news concerning a flaw in Adobe's Flash without providing a solution for the issue. Basically the problem is this: if a web site uses Flash and allows users to upload and download from the same domain as the rest of the application a user could potentially upload malicious code and watch while every users who views it downloads the nasty surprise. No-one has actually tried to do this, but now that the news is out in the open maybe we'll see the uptick begin.
There's no realy way to protect your system from this other than banning Flash; however, its wide use across the internet makes that virtually impossible. Some sites are fixing the problem on their end to better protect their users, like Windows Hotmail and YouTube. So be aware, and start worrying--after all, there's not a whole lot end users could do to stop this from happening.
Right to Know?
Wikipedia is being sued by two German murderers who want their names expunged from the U.S site's article concerning their crime. Under German law, the killers have the right to publicly distance themselves from their wrong doing after they've gotten out of prison; newspapers, websites and all other media outlets can no longer refer to them by name, just as "the perpetrator" or the like. That's causing problems here now, as the two men responsible for the murder of German actor Walter Sedlmayr want the English language version of the site to follow the German laws...instead of our First Amendment.
Interesting? Oh yes. DId we mention they'll settle for cash payment for each infringement barring removal? There's that too.
New Apple Store!
On a lighter, happier note, the fourth Apple store in New York City and the 279th in the world is set to open tomorrow morning. The opening is pretty standard really--a gorgeous space on prime real estate with beautiful products running an elegant system...that should bring in around $4,300 a square foot. You know, just another day in the life.
Check out the New York Times article with pre-opening pictures here.
Till tomorrow, Newsies...
