Apple In The News
Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...

February 3rd, 2010

Happy Wednesday folks,

We have a pretty traditional news segment for you today: rumors, more rumors and something so off the wall it made us giggle like schoolgirls. The iPhone's at bat now that iPad rumors have abated...but we're sure they'll keep switching spots as ship dates and refresh dates approach.

Foxconn Gets Backup?
Apple's favorite manufacturer, Foxconn, may be getting a hand producing Apple's newest iPhone from Asus subsidiary Pegatron. Now, this does come from the DigiTimes so we have to take it with a grain of salt, but it isn't the first time the companies have been linked. More interesting to us than the company manufacturing it is the rumor that this fourth generation iPhone could be CDMA and GSM compatible.

Yup, if the newest iPhone supports both systems it could run on AT&T, Verizon T-Mobile...and that kind of availability leads us right into our next point. Trust us, it's a doozy.

iPhone Loses Market Share
Analysts have long predicted a fall from grace for the iPhone and it looks like its market share has finally slipped. Although it only fell--according to ABI research--1.5%, the slip suggests that Android's open platform, multiple handset and carrier approach may be just the thing to challenge the iPhone.

Although we don't expect Apple to go crazy and start making different handsets just to court novelty, making the iPhone available on multiple carriers might become more necessity than luxury shortly.

Hopefully June's refresh--with whatever surprises it may bring--raises the profile of our favorite smart phone.

Wanted: Cyber thieves
Really, we couldn't leave you on that note! The Black Hat cyber security conference went down outside D.C. Monday and some of the finding reported were not any less funny because they were serious.

Two companies specializing in malicious software are posting virtual wanted ads online for new employees--people who will link nasty code to appealing links and pictures for a fee. The fees are small ($180 for each 100 downloads onto U.S. computers) but we guess it isn't bad for a highly annoying, highly illegal side job.

Have a good punishment for these jerks? Tell us on Twitter!

Till tomorrow, Newsies...
