Apple In The News
Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...

January 26th, 2010

Morning all,

What a busy morning for Apple news! After the press release about the Cupertino company's killer earnings, buzz continued with the FTC starting probes into the Nokia/Apple copyright infringement debate and Google releasing a "new" iPhone app.

Best Quarter Ever!!
We know, we sound like a high school senior, but at the risk of being overexcited we've got to say that the numbers are incredible. With $15.7 billion dollars in revenue and earnings of $3.67 per share the company's outlook is extremely rosy, though part of that may be due to an accounting change; we discussed this briefly before, but it has to do with iPhone revenue deferrment. Instead of spreading the money it earns for each device over the span of its life, the company is now accounting for that money at the time of sale. Same money, different way of looking at it.

Either way, Steve Jobs is pleased, and he even had a tablet teaser for those of us who are on tenterhooks about the big announcement tomorrow:

"The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."

Indeed.

Another Lawsuit
In the midst of Nokia's accusations that Apple has infringed on some very integral handset hardware, the Federal Trade Commission has announced an investigation that will hopefully decide the matter. The seven patents in question are used in most of Apple's products, according to Nokia, and Nokia doesn't want Apple to stop using its technology...just to start paying for it.

The patents have been filed, and therefore cannot lie, right? So hopefully this probe will resolve the conflict quickly, either way. Neither company can gain from another protracted legal battle, and we hate seeing accusations fly. Really.

Google Tries Again
And succeeds, this time...but only by bypassing the App Store completely. Whether this is a thoughtful undermining or just Google making their point is up for grabs, but iPhone (and Palm) users can now access a brand new version of Google Voice in web browser form. One thing is clear--regardless of intention this can only be perceived as a dig from one giant to another!

The new web app is much more interactive than its previous incarnation, with voicemail and dialing enabled right from the browser.

Happy about the new Google Voice? Tweet it!

Till tomorrow, Newsies...
