Apple In The News
Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...

January 13th, 2010

Morning all,

Lots of stuff happening in the Apple Universe today, and we're happy to report on a smidgen...we're tackling our favorite topics today: rumors, rumors, and complaints about other company's stuff.

Enjoy!

Rumor Mill Part Deux
"More tablet speculation?" you say? Oh yes. And we're pretty sure it's only going to get worse from here. Size, shape, OS...everything is being hotly debated outside of Apple's factories and boardrooms, and this last piece of intel makes us wonder what the heck is going on in there.

According to scarily accurate John Gruber (of Daring Fireball fame), the Apple tablet will be sans camera. Of any kind. So dreams of skype on the go, video IM, podcasting from your tablet...gone in a puff of smoke. It's ok, though, right? Isn't it?

We think a webcam would be incredibly useful on the tablet...especially since the iPhone's camera faces the back and most laptops (which the tablet is supposed to supplant) have a front facing camera for video capture. But who are we to doubt the brains and plans of Steve Jobs? Bottom line is everything's still up in the air, but a camera seems like a small thing that could make a big difference in attractiveness to customers.

App Store Update
Apparently, the days of waiting indefinitely for your app to be rejected or approved are over. During the Christmas close down from the 23rd of December to the 28th there must have been some serious overhauling in the machinery that decides developer's fates, because the times have been shaved down from a few weeks to a few days.

In fact, two developers we heard from had their approvals within 48 hours. Nice work, App Store team...we're glad that all that nasty press is going to go away. Everyone loves a good turnaround!

Nexus One
Aside from immediately conjuring "Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep" (which, admittedly, sometimes pops into our heads on the street now and sends us into fits of giggles) the new Google phone is having some...well...customer service issues.

We don't remember if there was an uproar like this when Apple debuted the iPhone--perhaps they were better prepared for the inevitable problems and questions since they've been selling hardware for years. But Google, HTC and T-Mobile have been passing the buck--and the phone calls--quite a bit and people who snapped up the Nexus One immediately have had problems, mostly with the phone deciding it would prefer the EDGE network to T-Mobile's 3G network, thankyouverymuch.

In addition to the handset refusing to stay on the faster 3G network, customers are teed off that they're having to email Google for answers, instead of, say, calling them. On their newly purchased Google phones. And some folks are concerned about a double whammy early termination fee ( $350 for "equiptment recovery" from Google and $200 from T-Mobile) and rightfully so, we think.

How fast wil they fix it? Give us your over under on Twitter.

Till tomorrow, Newsies...
