Apple In The News
Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...

January 6th, 2010

Howdy all,

We've got a bit of a hodge podge for you today...we try to link it together but sometimes our interests spread far and wide. Yesterday's unveiling of the Google Nexus One didn't shake the foundations of the country, but leaks about Apple's leaks shook ours (it's a whole secret, carefully orchestrated world out there). Also, new technology from Disney has us wondering how soon Apple's going to be optioning it.

The Price is Right?
If you just can't wait to check this puppy out and don't want to tie yourself to T-Mobile, Nexus One is going to set you back a whoppping $529. Is that reasonable, considering you can then make your own expensive cell phone plan arrangements? With T-Mobile's subsidies, however, the price drops to a very reasonable $179, and Verizon and Vodaphone are supposed to pick it up soon. We'd argue that the iPhone's interface is still the winner but the Google phone does have a couple neat features, like noise cancellation technology and a light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness to conserve battery life. The five megapixel camera with flash we can take or leave.

Consider yourself informed!

Martellaro Talks
Former Senior Marketing Manager John Martellaro read the Wall Street Journal article on Monday detailing information about the vaunted and as yet unproduced Applet...iSlate...iPad...whatever...and spilled some very serious beans. (Some of these names are priceless, and we honestly hope Apple is using one of them!) Of course the official stand is that Apple does not talk about unreleased products, but for lots of reasons...i.e. whipping the fanboys into a frenzy...it behooves them to keep the rumor mill churning.

Martellaro said:

"The way it works is that a senior exec will come in and say, 'We need to release this specific information. John, do you have a trusted friend at a major outlet? If so, call him/her and have a conversation. Idly mention this information and suggest that if it were published, that would be nice. No e-mails!' "

And there you have it. No records, no paper trail, and no one gets embarrassed as there's always someone around to take the blame....anyone want to take bets this was partly to see if they could get $1,000 for the device? And if one more person calls any new product a "(insert high performing example here) killer" we are going to tear our hair out. MacObserver reader James Smith summed it up with his comment:

"For $1,000, this thing couldn't kill stone tablets."

KeyChest Revealed
Disney's newest venture could really simplify digital movie purchases. It works like this: you buy a TV show or movie and store it on a remote server, where you can access it from a number of platforms like your phone, TV or computer. It fixes movies eating up your hard drive, lets you use that gorgeous new TV for movies you've bought online, and ensures you have one less DVD box to deal with...sounds like a good plan to us. We hate clutter.

How is Apple going to parlay this technology into big bucks? Tell us what you think on Twitter.

Till tomorrow, Newsies...
